The study looks at the emergence of the urban centres on the Bhagirathi river after the fall of Gaur in late sixteenth century. It show the trnasformation in Bengal during the sixteenth century with the rise of Arakan and the increasing Portuguese piracy in both the eastern and western parts of Bengal and how the newly emerging urban centres in the western parts of Bengal were influenced by the neo-Vaishnavism of Chaitanya.
