The three major areas at the conference were Art and Architecture, Literature and Textual Studies, and Philosophy. The contributions revealed: 1. That a comparison of the early art and architecture of the Jainas and Buddhists in India show a number of significant and interesting parallels; that these contain historical evidences depicting their statuses at a given time in history ; and that even if their meanings have changed, their `original' intent can be exposed. 2. A study of Buddhist and Jaina literature, either in comparison or of texts individually, can bring out more clearly `the imagery at work in them', often leading to `improved interpretations' of difficult passages; that texts can clearly show comparable meditative practices regarding the elements like earth and water. ...
